Show Creator Fired from X-Men ’97: Allegations of Sexual Misconduct and Legal Drama
A Deep Dive into the Revelation of Sexual Misconduct, Termination, and Upcoming Legal Action
The abrupt departure of X-Men ’97 show creator Beau DeMayo has sparked a whirlwind of controversy, allegations, and now, a potential legal battle with Marvel. Months after DeMayo’s dismissal, the reasons behind his exit have finally come to light, unveiling a complex narrative of alleged misconduct and a studio’s response.
DeMayo’s Role in X-Men ’97
Beau DeMayo joined the Disney+ revival of the beloved animated series as the show’s creator, executive producer, and head writer. His appointment was met with great anticipation, particularly as a Black gay man’s perspective on these iconic characters who often embody themes of societal marginalization.
However, just days before the premiere of X-Men ’97’s first season, DeMayo was reportedly fired. He had reportedly completed work on the second season at the time.
DeMayo’s Accusations against Marvel
In a series of social media posts, DeMayo alleged that Marvel removed his season two credits over a Pride Month post he shared on social media. The post featured fan art depicting him as a shirtless Cyclops.
“Sadly, this is the latest in a troubling pattern I suffered through while working on #XMen97 and #Blade,” DeMayo wrote. “I’ll have more to say soon but must take a step back from social media to find a safer space for me to be out, proud, and nerdy.”
Marvel’s Response
Marvel Studios responded with a statement claiming that DeMayo was “terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation.” The statement cited “egregious findings” that led to an immediate severance of ties.
Variety reported, citing unnamed sources, that the investigation focused on evidence of sexual misconduct and that DeMayo’s credits were removed after he repeatedly violated his termination agreement. Other sources claimed that the agreement included restrictions on his social media posts about the show.
Misconduct Allegations against DeMayo
The Insneider reported that unnamed sources alleged DeMayo sent nude or partially nude photos to young male staffers under the guise of seeking inspiration for the show. He allegedly continued to send these photos despite being asked to stop.
The report also included allegations of groping, emotional abuse, and physical abuse of staffers. Additionally, it alleged that DeMayo was removed from Netflix’s The Witcher due to similar misconduct.
Legal Action and Next Steps
DeMayo’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, announced plans to prove that Disney used an “illegal unconscionable” contract to silence the truth and prevent DeMayo from exercising his constitutional rights.
He accused Disney of “gaslighting” and “bullying” those who expose the truth, claiming that multiple clients were prepared to share their experiences.
“Beau DeMayo wants nothing from Marvel/Disney except the truth,” Freedman stated. “He will bravely tell the truth. So will I. Stand by.”
Future of X-Men ’97
Despite the controversy, X-Men ’97 season two is expected to be released as scheduled. Matthew Chauncey, known for his work on What If…?, will take over writing duties for season three.
This complex and rapidly evolving story continues to captivate the entertainment industry, raising questions about workplace conduct, the power dynamics in Hollywood, and the importance of transparency and accountability.
