Samsung is recalling more than 1 million electric ranges after numerous fire and injury reports

Samsung Recalls Electric Ranges Due to Fire and Injury Concerns

Samsung has issued a recall for over 1.12 million electric ranges with slide-in stovetops, citing reports of 250 fires and dozens of injuries.

Cause of Recall

The recalled ranges have front-mounted knobs that can be accidentally activated, leading to a fire hazard. This can occur when people or pets unintentionally bump into the knobs.

Affected Models

Consumers can determine if their slide-in electric range is impacted by checking the model number printed on the product. A list of affected models is available from both Samsung and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Reported Incidents and Damages

  • Samsung has received over 300 reports of knobs activating unintentionally since 2013.
  • The recalled ranges have been associated with 250 fires, 18 of which resulted in significant property damage.
  • Seven fires resulted in pet deaths.
  • Approximately 40 injuries have been reported, including eight requiring medical attention.

Consumer Actions

If you own a recalled range, contact Samsung Electronics America immediately for a free set of knob locks or covers compatible with your model. In the meantime, take extra precautions to keep children and pets away from the knobs and check that the range is off before leaving the house or going to bed.

General Stovetop Safety Tips

  • Never leave anything on top of your range when not in use, as these items could ignite if the range is accidentally activated.
  • Keep children and pets away from the stovetop when in use.
  • Always use caution when operating the stovetop.
