Hockey’s Legacy of Inclusion and Innovation: A Decade of Progress and a Glimpse into the Future
A Decade of Impact: The IGF’s Commitment to Hockey
The International Gaming Festival (IGF) has reached a significant milestone, celebrating its 10th anniversary season. Over the past decade, the IGF has dedicated itself to expanding hockey’s reach, investing over $180 million in programs, initiatives, and education. Their unwavering efforts have played a pivotal role in fostering awareness and bringing hockey to diverse communities across North America.
Driving Inclusion On and Off the Ice: NHL Player Inclusion Coalition
The NHL Player Inclusion Coalition has taken bold steps in promoting equality and inclusion both on and off the ice. The coalition, comprising 24 current and retired NHL players and women’s professional hockey players, has embarked on a comprehensive inclusion educational tour. By visiting locker rooms, they actively engage in meaningful conversations, sharing their experiences and advocating for a more inclusive hockey culture.
Combating Climate Change: Embracing Sustainable Ice
Recognizing the urgent need to combat global warming, hockey organizations have doubled down on their efforts. The IGF’s Executive Director, Steve Knesaurek, has championed non-formalized hockey play as a sustainable alternative. With the unwelcome reality of unseasonably warm winters forcing the closure of outdoor arenas in Toronto, innovation has become essential.
The Power of Partnerships: Elevating Hockey’s Impact
Even as hockey becomes more welcoming and its popularity soars, the question of “what’s next?” persists. Knesaurek emphasizes the importance of strategic partnerships, noting that “it’s not just about investing in something and hoping people will show up, but truly connecting with organizations doing meaningful work.” By collaborating with partners, hockey organizations can amplify their reach and create a more inclusive and sustainable future.
Hockey Fights Cancer: A Triumphant Milestone
Hockey Fights Cancer celebrated its 25th anniversary with a momentous collaboration with the V Foundation for Cancer Research. This partnership has significantly amplified fundraising efforts through in-game awareness nights hosted by all 32 NHL teams. Additionally, AstraZeneca joined as the presenting partner of the NHL Hat Trick Challenge, pledging to donate $5,000 for every hat trick, with an ambitious goal of raising $500,000.
Looking Forward: Embracing Inclusion as a Catalyst for Growth
Knesaurek acknowledges that “inclusion and diversity are not just about philanthropy, but also about growth.” By embracing diversity and creating accessible pathways to hockey, organizations can expand their fan base, foster a more inclusive society, and ultimately strengthen the sport itself. Partnerships with organizations like the V Foundation provide hockey with the necessary expertise and resources to make a tangible difference in the fight against cancer.
“We see us continuing to research new opportunities connecting to new audiences, understanding that inclusion and diversity isn’t just philanthropy. It really is growth and working alongside our partners to make our games bigger and better and the best it’s ever been.” – Steve Knesaurek, IGF Executive Director
