fler being detained by police just hours before PGA Championship second round

Scottie Scheffler Detained by Police Ahead of PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number one ranked golfer and recent winner of The Masters and The Players Championship, was detained by police in handcuffs near Valhalla Golf Club ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship. The incident, which occurred on Friday morning, is believed to stem from a misunderstanding with traffic flow, according to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington.

According to Darlington, Scheffler attempted to drive past a police officer into Valhalla Golf Club due to backed-up traffic. The officer attached himself to Scheffler’s car, and Scheffler stopped his vehicle at the entrance to the golf club. The officer then reportedly screamed at Scheffler to exit the car and shoved him against the vehicle before placing him in handcuffs.

Footage from the scene shows a police officer saying, “Here’s the thing. Right now he’s going to jail. He’s going to jail and there’s nothing you can do about it.” Darlington explained that Scheffler attempted to continue driving after the police officer instructed him to stop. The officer then attached himself to the side of Scheffler’s car, and Scheffler stopped the vehicle at the entrance to Valhalla Golf Club, about 10 to 20 yards from the initial point of instruction.

The PGA Championship later confirmed that the second round starting times would be delayed by one hour and 20 minutes due to the incident.

Additional Details

In a statement, the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) said that officers had been called to reports of a collision involving a male pedestrian and a bus at around 5am that morning. The pedestrian received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. The LMPD Traffic Unit is investigating.

Scheffler’s detention and the subsequent delay in the PGA Championship’s second round have raised questions about the handling of the situation and the potential impact on the tournament. It remains unclear what charges, if any, Scheffler may face.

The PGA of America and Scheffler’s representatives have not yet commented on the incident.

This is a developing story, and more information is expected to be released in the coming hours and days.
