The Struggle Against the Far Right in France and Europe

The outcome of the second round of legislative elections in France provided relief to democrats across Europe. France’s descent into authoritarianism would have been a devastating blow to the European Union.

It would have not only solidified the victory of racism and extreme right-wing ideologies, but also of foreign powers who have fueled Jordan Bardella and Marine Le Pen’s campaign through hybrid warfare tactics.

Putin’s Shadow over the Far Right

Behind the self-proclaimed patriotism of the far right, the shadow of Vladimir Putin and adversaries of Western democracy looms.

The defense of humanistic values demands an unwavering commitment to solidarity, equitable policies, and a balanced and just approach to global affairs.

After a first round that threatened a far-right victory, France rallied. The left and center-right united in a “republican front” to prevent the far right from governing. The public responded, and this mobilization proved decisive.

No Legitimate Shades of Fascism

Bardella’s declarations following his defeat reveal his true nature. His professed illiberalism and affinity for Putin’s Russia are undeniable. The Orbán-Le Pen alliance is now fully exposed.

However, this new far-right group should not divert attention from others with similar ideologies. The ECR group and the self-proclaimed “sovereignist” group are equally concerning.

There are no acceptable variations of fascism. All share a core hatred for democracy, republicanism, and humanistic values.

Demarcating Democracy from Fascism

The French experience demonstrates the power of clarity. In times like these, a clear line must be drawn between democracy and its enemies.

The European People’s Party (EPP) must abandon its reliance on far-right parties for support. Alignments with those who undermine Europe’s interests cannot be tolerated.

The European Parliament’s decision to include two far-right vice-presidents in its leadership undermines the institution’s founding values.

A Call for Unity Against the Far Right

Ursula Von der Leyen’s coalition should unequivocally distance itself from the far right. The time for ambiguity and cynicism is over.

There is only one way to confront the far right: collectively and uncompromisingly.
