Iran Calls for Action against Israel’s “Crimes” in Gaza, Dismisses US as Neutral Mediator
In a recent statement, Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and called for decisive steps to hold it accountable.
Lack of Confidence in the US
Bagheri Kani expressed skepticism about the United States’ neutrality in mediating ceasefire talks, highlighting its role as a supplier of weapons to Israel. He asserted that the US cannot be considered an impartial arbiter.
Dialogue with Qatar
Bagheri Kani’s remarks came after a phone conversation with Qatar’s Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. They discussed the ongoing Doha talks aimed at brokering a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitating a prisoner exchange.
US-Sponsored Proposal and Next Steps
The Doha talks have resulted in a new US proposal to bridge the gap between Hamas and Israel. Both sides have been invited to further negotiations in Cairo before the end of the following week.
Heightened Tensions
The diplomatic efforts come amidst heightened tensions following the assassinations of senior Hamas and Hezbollah figures. Iran and Hezbollah are said to be contemplating a response, raising concerns about further escalation.
