Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Ukrainian Intelligence Details Raid on Kinburn Peninsula

Ukrainian intelligence has released details of a raid on the Russian-occupied Kinburn Peninsula in the Mykolaiv region. The raid, conducted on the night of August 8, 2024, by Ukrainian special forces, reportedly resulted in the deaths of approximately 30 Russian soldiers and the destruction of six armored vehicles.

According to the Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR), the raid targeted Russian fortifications at positions known as “Kinburn Fortress,” “Sea Station,” and “Suvorov Monument.” GUR stated that the Ukrainian flag was planted near the Suvorov Monument.

The Russian Defense Ministry, however, claimed that Russian forces had repelled an attempt by a Ukrainian special operations group to land on the Kinburn Peninsula, using two boats. According to the Russian ministry, Ukrainian forces suffered initial losses due to minefields and were subsequently eliminated by gunfire. Russia claimed that the Ukrainian losses totaled 12 personnel.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is unable to independently verify the claims of either side in the conflict.

The Kinburn Peninsula is located in the Russian-occupied part of the Mykolaiv region, a few kilometers from the city of Ochakiv. Local authorities have repeatedly emphasized that Ochakiv is often attacked from this territory.
