Kelsea Ballerini announces new album, ‘Patterns.’ It isn’t what you’d expect: ‘I’m team no rules’

Kelsea Ballerini’s “Patterns”: A Complex Exploration of Love, Self-Discovery, and Growth

Kelsea Ballerini’s upcoming fifth studio album, “Patterns,” promises to be a departure from the lovey-dovey pop anthems that fans might have come to expect from her. Instead, Ballerini offers an intimate and vulnerable look into the complexities of life and relationships.

Breaking from Expectations

Ballerini admits that she could have easily crafted a carefree, romantic album given her recent relationship with “Outer Banks” star Chase Stokes. However, she felt it would have been inauthentic and a disservice to her own experiences.

“I think that people probably expect this really happy-go-lucky, love, mushy, gushy record from me. That’s not the case,” she says. “And I’m really proud of that. It would have been easy to, I think, just collect the really beautiful parts of my life that I’ve dusted off and found the last couple of years. But that’s not the fullness of my experience.”

Instead, “Patterns” embraces a wider range of emotions and themes, from the euphoria of love to the pain of heartbreak and the challenges of personal growth.

Collaboration and Vulnerability

To create “Patterns,” Ballerini enlisted an all-female team, including co-producer and co-writer Alysa Vanderheym, songwriters Jessie Jo Dillon, Karen Fairchild, and Hillary Lindsey. This safe and supportive environment allowed Ballerini to open up and explore her emotions with unprecedented depth.

“I’ve never felt so safe making an album before, top to bottom. There was more pressure on this record just because of all the ears and eyeballs that ‘Welcome Mat’ got,” Ballerini says. “And so, I wanted to safely make this one where I didn’t feel the pressure from the inside.”

Genre-Bending Explorations

While Ballerini remains rooted in country music, she fearlessly experiments with different genres on “Patterns.” From the gentle acoustic strumming of “Cowboys Cry Too” to the upbeat pop of “Sorry Mom,” Ballerini demonstrates her versatility and willingness to push boundaries.

“To me, what makes me undoubtedly country is my storytelling and my songwriting. And that will never waver or change. But, per usual, I didn’t overthink whether there was a banjo or a beat drop. And there are both on this record, as there have been on my other ones,” she says. “I think lyrically and content-wise, I really just was team no rules. Nothing’s off limits.”

Themes of Love, Self-Discovery, and Growth

“Patterns” explores a wide range of themes, including:

  • The complexities of romantic relationships, from the highs of passion to the lows of heartbreak
  • The importance of self-reflection and growth
  • The intergenerational bonds between women
  • The transformative power of music

Ballerini hopes that by sharing her own story, she can connect with listeners and inspire them to embrace their own journeys.

“It’s my job to make a record that has something for everyone. But that comes from making a record that’s true to me, and that’s what I did,” she concludes. “And so, I just hope people feel something,” while listening. “Whatever it is.”
