Mom who was once homeless with son gets to watch him compete at Paris Olympics

From Homelessness to the Olympics: A Mother and Son’s Journey

In the heart-wrenching yet inspiring story of Robyn Rabinovitch and her son Ivan Puskovitch, the true spirit of perseverance shines through. Once facing the uncertainties of homelessness, they have triumphed over adversity to reach the hallowed grounds of the Olympics, where Ivan will represent Team USA in the 10-kilometer marathon swim event.

A Mother’s Unwavering Support

“It was a ‘we’ effort … there’s so many people involved [along] the way, and she’s at the front of that freaking list,” Ivan gushed about his mother’s unwavering support throughout his journey.

Robyn’s role as Ivan’s primary swimming coach until age 13 was just one aspect of her unwavering dedication. She recounts Ivan’s exceptional talent from a young age, breaking national age group records by 10.

Financial Struggles and Homelessness

Despite the family’s financial challenges, Robyn’s determination to support Ivan’s dream led her to enroll him in a private school. However, a severe health issue in 2017 left her with vision loss in her right eye and significant financial difficulties.

“My life just kind of imploded that summer,” Robyn recalled, sharing the heart-wrenching choices she had to make between feeding her children and affording her own medication.

The family’s circumstances led them to homelessness, staying in cars, basements, and occasionally hotels when possible. Ivan expressed how the situation put them on a “pretty tough path” for the next year and a half.

Overcoming Setbacks

Despite the setbacks, Ivan’s swimming career continued to flourish during his teenage years, earning him multiple junior titles and an offer from the University of Southern California.

In February 2023, Ivan’s dream of representing Team USA at the Olympics was realized when he qualified for the 2024 Paris Games at the World Aquatics Championships.

A Mother’s Dream Come True

Robyn’s overwhelming joy and tears of happiness were captured on livestream as Ivan’s Olympic berth was announced. Her friend’s initiative to start a GoFundMe page to raise funds for her to witness her son’s Olympic moment has garnered over $29,000.

“I can’t believe so many people have banded together to try to make sure that I’m going to be able to be there to see my son in the Olympics, living out his dream,” Robyn expressed her appreciation and gratitude.

A Bond Unbreakable

“She has certainly sacrificed the most and is the most deserving of being able to see the culmination of all that sacrifice,” Ivan acknowledged his mother’s exceptional contributions.

On August 9th, Ivan will compete in the men’s 10-kilometer marathon swim event in Paris. His journey to the Olympics is a testament to the unwavering bond between a mother and son, as well as their indomitable spirit in the face of adversity.
