Paris Olympics: Noah Lyles places third in 200 meters, has COVID

Noah Lyles Battling COVID Earns Bronze in 200 Meters at Paris Olympics

Paris, France – August, 2024 – Noah Lyles, the world’s fastest man, had his sights set on winning the coveted sprint triple at the 2024 Summer Olympics, but those dreams were put on hold when he tested positive for COVID-19 just 36 hours after winning gold in the 100 meters.

Despite his illness, Lyles managed to finish third in his specialty, the 200 meters, behind winner Letsile Tebogo of Botswana and Kenny Bednarek of the U.S.

Lyles said after the race that he had been feeling the effects of the virus since Tuesday morning, with chills, aches, and a sore throat. He was able to keep his illness a secret from his competitors and continue training and competing, but he admitted that it affected his performance.

Tebogo, on the other hand, ran a strong race, taking the lead coming off the curve and holding on to it down the home stretch. Bednarek tried to catch up, but he couldn’t close the gap.

After the finish, Lyles collapsed on the track, struggling to breathe and experiencing chest pains. Medical staff helped him to his feet and eventually took him away in a wheelchair. He later appeared before reporters wearing a black face mask and said that he was proud of himself for winning the bronze medal despite the circumstances.

Lyles’ performance is a reminder that even the world’s best athletes are not immune to the effects of COVID-19. Despite his illness, he was able to show his determination and resilience by competing in the Olympics and winning a medal.

It remains to be seen whether Lyles will be able to run the 400-meter relay on Friday. He said that he will leave that decision up to his coaches and teammates.
