Reinforcing Responsible Use of Urban Water Sources in Málaga

Preserving Water Resources and Maintaining Urban Harmony

The Málaga City Council has announced the deployment of a surveillance system to ensure compliance with the Ordinance for Citizen Coexistence, which aims to encourage responsible use of urban water sources.

According to the City Council, individuals who violate the ordinance and misuse the fountains (for example, by using them for washing) face fines of up to €750.

“The Ordinance for the Guarantee of Citizen Coexistence and the Protection of Urban Space in the City of Málaga prohibits using fountains for bathing, washing any object, and watering or bathing animals,” the Council stated in a press release, acknowledging the “irresponsible use” of fountains on Malagueta Beach.

Lavapiés and Showers Remain Deactivated

To address the ongoing drought situation, the City Council has also kept lavapiés and beach showers that use potable water deactivated. Exceptions are made for three designated areas for people with reduced mobility (El Dedo, Malagueta, and Misericordia).

Public announcements will remind citizens to use drinking fountains responsibly, avoiding inappropriate use that could result in fines.

Promoting Responsible Water Usage

The measures implemented by the City Council aim to promote sustainable practices and prevent the misuse of water resources. Fountains serve as essential sources of drinking water in public spaces and should be used respectfully.

Residents and visitors are urged to adhere to the regulations to ensure a harmonious urban environment and preserve Málaga’s water resources.

Education and Enforcement

In addition to the surveillance system, the City Council will also conduct educational campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of responsible water use. Signs will be placed near fountains, reminding users of the prohibited actions.

Conclusion

The Málaga City Council’s initiative reflects the growing need for water conservation and responsible resource management. By enforcing the Ordinance for Citizen Coexistence and educating the public, the city aims to create a more sustainable and livable urban environment.

Working together, citizens and authorities can ensure the proper use of urban water sources and contribute to a more harmonious and water-secure Málaga.
