Smith eyes redemption over ‘unacceptable’ Aussie flop as star locked in for homecoming

Cam Smith Eyes Redemption at Home After ‘Unacceptable’ Aussie Flop

Cam Smith, the 2022 British Open champion, has set his sights on redemption at this year’s Australian PGA Championship after a disappointing performance in 2023. The Australian star has also committed to playing in the Queensland PGA Championship, giving fans in his home state a double dose of elite golf.

Australian PGA Redemption

Smith, a three-time winner of the Australian PGA (2017, 2018, 2022), missed the cut at last year’s event and was visibly upset. He described his performance as “unacceptable” and expressed his determination to make amends this year.

“It’s not acceptable. It’s very upsetting, actually,” Smith said at the time. “I’ll be back next year and hopefully I can make amends.”

Queensland PGA Debut

In addition to his Australian PGA aspirations, Smith will also make his debut at the Queensland PGA Championship, which will be held at Nudgee Golf Club in October.

Smith, who is now a member of the controversial LIV Golf Series, sees the Queensland PGA as a good preparation for the Australian PGA and an opportunity to compete in front of his home crowd.

“I think playing at Nudgee will be good preparation for Royal Queensland and hopefully will have me at my best to attempt to take back the Joe Kirkwood Cup (by winning the Australian PGA),” Smith said.

Australian Golf Stars in Action

Smith’s return to Australia will coincide with several other top Australian golfers, including defending Australian PGA champion Min Woo Lee and former world number one Jason Day.

The strong field will make it difficult for Smith to win both events, but he remains optimistic about his chances.

“Of course I’d love to win both but it’s going to be difficult with the fields that will be at the two tournaments,” Smith said.

Smith’s schedule also includes the NSW Open in November.

Economic Boost for Brisbane

Smith’s return to Queensland is expected to provide a significant economic boost to the region, with millions of dollars in support for local businesses.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the city is thrilled to host Smith and other world-class athletes for the two events.

“We are thrilled Cam Smith will join a suite of world class athletes to tee off at two must-see events for local and visiting golf fans,” Schrinner said.

“The benefits of these elite tournaments will be felt across the region, delivering millions in economic support for local Brisbane businesses.”
