The 2024 Olympic Games: Day 12 Results for Ukrainian Athletes

On August 7, 2024, the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris held their 12th day of competition. Ukraine was represented by 12 athletes, four of whom had a chance to win medals.

Boxing

Boxer Oleksandr Khyzhniak won Ukraine’s third gold medal at the 2024 Olympics. He defeated Kazakhstan’s Nurbek Oralbay in the final by a split decision (3:2).

Track and Field

In the men’s high jump qualification, three Ukrainian athletes attempted to qualify for the final: Andriy Protsenko, Oleh Doroshchuk, and Vladyslav Lavskyi. Only Doroshchuk managed to do so, clearing 2.24 meters.

Wrestling

Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Jean Beleniuk and Parviz Nasibov, who won silver at the previous Olympics, both competed in Greco-Roman wrestling.

Nasibov reached the final and secured at least a silver medal, while Beleniuk lost in the semi-finals and will compete for bronze.

Oksana Livhach also competed for bronze in women’s freestyle wrestling but was unable to win a medal.

  • Athletics: Race walking, final: Ivan Banzeruk and Lyudmyla Olianovska finished 17th with a time of 3:01:50 hours.
  • Canoe sprint: Kayak single, 500m, qualification: Mariia Povkh finished fourth (1:54.13 minutes) and did not advance directly to the semi-finals.
  • Athletics: High jump, qualification: Oleh Doroshchuk qualified for the final (2.24 meters), Vladyslav Lavskyi (failed to clear 2.20 meters), and Andriy Protsenko (failed to clear the starting height of 2.15 meters) were eliminated.
  • Wrestling: Greco-Roman wrestling, up to 67 kg: Parviz Nasibov defeated Serbia’s Mate Nemesh (3:2) in the round of 16, Kyrgyzstan’s Amanatur Ismailav (7:6) in the quarter-finals, and Azerbaijan’s Khasrat Jafarov (3:3) in the semi-finals. He advanced to the final, which will be held on August 8.
  • Wrestling: Greco-Roman wrestling, up to 87 kg: Jean Beleniuk defeated China’s Haitao Qian (7:1) in the round of 16, Kazakhstan’s Nursultan Turssynov (7:3) in the quarter-finals, and lost to Iran’s Alireza Mohammadian in the semi-finals.
  • Canoe sprint: Canoe single, 1000m, qualification: Pavlo Altukhov failed to qualify directly for the semi-finals, finishing 5th in his heat with a time of 4:11.32.
  • Diving: 3m springboard, individual event, qualification: Viktoriia Kesar did not qualify, finishing 27th with a score of 217.75 points.
  • Wrestling: Freestyle wrestling, up to 50 kg, bronze medal match: Oksana Livhach lost to 2020 Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan and missed out on a chance to win a medal.
  • Boxing: Up to 80 kg, final: Oleksandr Khyzhniak defeated Nurbek Oralbay of Kazakhstan by a split decision (3:2) and won the gold medal.

Ukraine is represented by 140 athletes at the 2024 Olympics, who are competing in 23 sports.

After the 12th day of competition, Ukraine has eight medals: three gold, two silver, and three bronze. The team is in 17th place in the medal standings.
