Uncontrolled Fire Threatens Agiasos, Ev evacuations Underway Amidst Intense Suppression Efforts

The relentless wildfire in the Amary and Agios Vasilios regions of Rethymno continues to rage unabated, with valiant teams of firefighters and volunteers battling tirelessly against time, darkness, and the inferno’s wrath.

Reinforcements Arrive, Battle Intensifies

To bolster the suppression efforts, a contingent of 35 forest firefighters arrived from Athens via air, adding their skills and strength to the forces already engaged in the fight against the flames in Rethymno. The fire’s fronts extend across multiple areas, including Agia Paraskevi in the Amary municipality and Agios Ioannis Amary, with the fire advancing toward Agia Galini, as reported by Michalis Sarris, head of civil protection for the Rethymno regional unit.

On the opposite side of the blaze, active fronts are present in Ano Meros Amary, Chortaki Amary, and Orne Agios Vasilios.

In a significant development, the village of Agia Paraskevi has been successfully protected from the flames’ reach, as confirmed by Mr. Sarris. The heroic efforts of the firefighters have prevented the fire from penetrating the village, safeguarding lives and property.

However, the fire’s destructive path has left a trail of devastation, with hundreds of olive, agricultural, and grazing lands falling victim to the flames. Firefighters have been working relentlessly to contain the blaze, employing strategic measures to keep it from encroaching further into populated areas.

Aerial Support and Evacuations

In addition to the ground forces, aerial firefighting operations have been underway, with two Canadair aircraft and one PZL aircraft providing crucial support from the sky. The aircraft have been making repeated drops of water and retardant on the blaze’s fronts.

As a precautionary measure, evacuations have been carried out in several villages due to the fire’s proximity. Residents of Agia Paraskevi, Chortaki, and parts of Agios Vasileios have been temporarily relocated to ensure their safety.

The situation remains tense, with firefighters and volunteers working tirelessly to extinguish the blaze. The rugged terrain and strong winds pose significant challenges, but the unwavering determination of the firefighting forces gives hope for the eventual containment and control of the fire.

The community stands in solidarity with the firefighters and volunteers, offering support and expressing gratitude for their selfless efforts in protecting lives and property. The outpouring of appreciation for their bravery and dedication is a testament to the community’s spirit of resilience and unwavering support for those on the frontlines.

As the battle against the fire continues, the thoughts and prayers of the community are with the firefighters, volunteers, and all those affected by the devastation. Together, we will overcome this adversity and emerge stronger.
